Spinal hernia

Massage for hernia of the lumbar spine

In the lumbar spine often protrusion of the discs occurs and a hernia forms between the disc and the vertebra. It is necessary to massage the first stage of the spinal hernia to strengthen the vertebral ligaments and prevent the destruction and degeneration of the supporting organ and cartilage.

Massage for hernia of the lumbar spine

If the ligaments are stretched, then the edges of the vertebrae are in contact and rubbing against each other, ossification occurs and the bones reactively grow, the joints become restrictedly mobile and take the wrong position.

In the lumbar spine there is the highest load on the intervertebral discs, therefore, they have a height greater than the discs of other spinal sections. The longitudinal ligament, on the contrary, is narrow and weak, so it is not capable of preventing the formation of a hernia or a prolapse of the disc between the vertebrae.

The patient begins to feel severe pain. From the lumbar back it extends to the sacral region and to the buttocks, the lateral or posterior surface of the thighs, radiating literally to the toes. At the same time knee and Achilles reflexes decrease or disappear. In severe cases, the work of the pelvic organs is disturbed, which requires surgical intervention.

Massage with hernia of the spine and exercise therapy after an acute period helps to restore normal functioning of the ligamentous apparatus and the corset of the back muscles. Before doing a massage of the lumbar spine, the massage therapist takes into account the condition of the patient’s spine and determines the massage technique with the doctor in accordance with the clinical manifestations of the disease and their severity, the presence of concomitant diseases and the patient’s individual characteristics.

Massage for spinal hernia can be a classic, point, segmental-reflex. Honey massage is also often performed, although there are many supporters and opponents of this type of massage for hernia of the lumbar back among medical professionals.

In order to perform a honey massage, the massage therapist must know the form of a hernia from the vertebrologist because the massage is contraindicated in case of large pathological forms of hernia. The position of the patient during the procedure should be comfortable and comfortable. Honey massage is performed only by qualified masseurs. A patient with a lower back massage should lie on the stomach. To reduce the lumbar muscle tension, a cushion is placed under the tibia.

Honey massage is performed gently and gently, rough methods and intensive manual movements: do not apply twisting, twitching and turning (rooting), do not cause pain. Honey back massage lasts at first briefly, gradually its duration increases.

The duration of a classic (or other) lumbar back massage is determined by the attending physician. It can last for several minutes or an hour with a course of treatment of 10-20 procedures. After a 2-3 month break, the course of massages is renewed if necessary.

For hernias of the lumbar, stroking, rubbing, kneading and vibratory techniques with additional movements are used. Massage is performed simultaneously with other complex types of treatment.

Massage Technique

The patient lies on his stomach on a solid basis: a table or a couch in order to avoid bending the spine in the lower back. A pillow is placed under the stomach, and a cushion is placed under the legs to lift them at an angle of 45 угол to relax the body, especially in the lumbosacral region. Arms are placed along the body. The head is turned onto the right or left cheek or placed on a special device with an opening for lowering the head just below the couch.

To relieve tension and pain, perform a preliminary back massage:

combined stroking, gently squeezing the edge of the palm, circular superficial stroking of the broadest muscles and long muscles, on the muscles of the buttocks - combined and double circular stroking, long kneading and shaking, again combined stroking, again on the back - stroking with two hands, with a gentle face, with a gentle face, again with a combined stroking, again on the back - stroking with two hands, with a gentle face, with a gentle face, again, with a combined stroking the muscles, starting from the iliac crest of the bone to the armpits, are ordinary, double annular, then stroking and shaking.

Now you can just start the basic massage of the lower back, which includes:

combined strokings of the buttocks knolls towards the center of the back, then two hands stroking the broadest back muscles towards the buttocks, along them with spiral-shaped movements clockwise and back, squeezing the edge of the palm, alternating with strokes and shaking on the gluteus, then in the lumbar region, circular rubbing along the spine with finger pads at right angles to the skin, then squeezing and stroking, rubbing along the spine with the edge of the palm, then across the back, moving towards the buttock (sawing), rectilinear rubbing along the spine with the thumbs with increasing pressure, spiral rubbing, sawing and stroking, along the spine - simultaneously with the two sides dotted rubbing with the thumbs with a displacement of the skin by 3-4 cm with the fingers, alternating with squeezing and stroking, across the loin and sacrum - wringing with the edge of the palm, kneading with the base or edge of the palm, pinching and double ring kneading, single and shaking, on the buttocks - stroking, rubbing, squeezing, working kneading fingers or the base of the palm, the crest of a fist, shaking, stroking and working on the coccyx.

Each movement is repeated 3-4 times, increasing their number and impact force by the end of the course. The masseur should know that before the massage of the sacro-lumbar area, the buttocks, the long and the broadest back muscles, are well worked out.

Massage is an indispensable component of any treatment course for herniated intervertebral disc of the lumbar spine. Sessions relieve muscle tension and pain, restore the power of the damaged disc, stimulate the immune system to actively combat the disease.

This is a very effective treatment for hernia. With proper therapy, including massage and medical gymnastics, in 90% of cases it is possible to stop the degenerative processes and return the disc to its former strength and elasticity. And at the stage of hernia development in 70% of cases it is possible to avoid surgery.

The procedure is performed by hand or with special devices. The decision on the appointment of the course takes only a doctor.

A single massage does not have the desired effect - the result is only regular courses.

The recommended type of massage depends on the cause of the pathology.

(if the table is not fully visible - scroll it to the right)

Depending on the individual susceptibility, the doctor may prescribe the following types of massage:

Independently conducting a massage is highly undesirable - only a specialist should perform it. Illiterate and careless movements can cause irreparable harm to health.

The procedure in the period of exacerbation in the presence of pain and signs of inflammation is strictly prohibited.

A distinctive feature of all types of massage with hernia of the lumbar spine - a categorical ban on any power movements. The movements must be exclusively sparing, in which damage to the diseased disc by bone segments is excluded.

In 70% of cases, a herniated disc of the lumbar spine is accompanied by displacement of the nearest vertebrae. And one of the tasks of a massage therapist is to correct these vertebrae into place without aggravating the current state of health.

With the appearance of even minor pain sensations, the session immediately stops.

Before performing the basic techniques, preliminary preparation of the lower back is carried out: the massage therapist warms the skin and muscles with light circular motions and strokes in order to avoid pain during the main part of the procedure.

The masseur performs smooth stroking movements, alternating them with a moderate rubbing. After warming up and relaxing the muscles, the specialist applies the elements of acupressure and circular rubbing. Then he makes movements aimed at stretching the vertebrae and reducing pressure on the affected lumbar disc.

Vacuum massage is performed using ordinary glass or special pneumatic cans. Air is removed from the jar (pneumatic is simply squeezed with a hand, and tweezers with a burning cotton swab are inserted into the glass), and then quickly placed on the patient's body.

Because of the vacuum in the bank - the skin is absorbed into it. The level of skin absorbed should not exceed 2 cm.

Further, the massage therapist in a special way moves these banks in the lower back. The main movement is carried out along the spine, without touching it. To make it easier to slip on the skin, pre-apply oil or fat cream.

The suction effect contributes to the rush of blood to the treated area of the body, thereby restoring nutrition in the damaged disk.

The formation of small bruises on the massaged area (hematomas) is the natural response of the body. They disappear on their own within a few days.

This type of procedure is carried out with the use of natural honey, to which is added fir or palm oil.

Honey massage is performed in two stages:

Initially, the skin is warmed up with the movements of an ordinary classic massage.

Then a thin layer of honey is applied to the hernia area and rubbed until it thickens. Next, the massage therapist tightly puts his palms on his back and sharply tears them off.

In addition to strengthening muscle tissue and stimulating blood circulation, honey massage helps to restore weakened reflexes that have arisen during compression by hernial protrusion of nerve roots. Therefore, it is prescribed for the later stages of the disease.

The technique of performing classical massage for a herniated disc from a massage therapist and rehabilitation therapist Svet Andrew, who talks about the effect of therapeutic massage and shows the basic techniques.

This video is about a honey massage of the back, in which the author tells about the effect of the procedure, the technique of its implementation, the preparatory and final procedures that enhance the effect of the massage.

For herniated lumbar intervertebral disc, doctors strongly recommend the use of massage. The main conditions for its effectiveness are the performance of a competent specialist after a thorough examination and outside the period of exacerbation.

The lumbar spine often undergoes various pathological processes. One of the most common types of diseases is a hernia. In most cases, the pathology is treated by conservative methods. Spinal hernia therapy includes medical methods and physiotherapy. The patient is also recommended back massage. But many patients are wondering whether it is possible to massage with hernia of the lumbar spine.

Massage with hernial inflammation in the lumbar region is recommended not to do in the acute period. It should be noted the benefits of procedures on the condition of damaged tissues. The benefits of massage treatments largely depend on the specialist who performs them. If all the requirements are met and the technician is properly followed, the therapy bears no risks.

As a result of the full course of the patient, the pain in the lumbar region is reduced, the tension of the inflamed muscle tissue is relieved, the blood circulation is restored, and physical activity is facilitated.

The actions of a massage therapist can be dangerous in the absence of appropriate experience and qualifications from a specialist. It is very important that the massage be carried out only in the absence of contraindications to this method of therapy.

Spinal hernia is a serious pathology. You should not resort to massage procedures in the presence of contraindications. First of all, it is forbidden to massage in the period of exacerbation and the patient has strong painful sensations.

Also referred to as contraindications:

infectious, purulent and neoplastic diseases, hypertension (2 and 3 degrees), oncology of internal organs, high temperature, gestation period.

Depending on the method of massage procedures used, there may be additional contraindications that the attending physician considers before prescribing a therapy session. Each treatment method should be discussed in detail with a specialist. In the process of massage therapy it is forbidden to carry out the massaging of the limbs.

Important! Self massage is not recommended. It is very easy to damage the spine, so you should trust a professional.

There are many types of back massage, which are used to restore the natural processes and eliminate the symptoms of low back hernia. Some types of this therapy relate to official medicine, some to unconventional. Preference is better to give therapy, which is recognized by medicine. Non-traditional methods can affect the body of each person in different ways.

Most often, experts recommend the following types of massage:

classic, vacuum, manual.

What types of massage are necessary for the patient are defined by the therapist observing the patient. The purpose of each technique for treating a hernia is to relax the muscles, stretch the spine, prevent pain, prevent muscle dysfunction and restore tissue nutrition.

Attention! Independently determine the appropriate type of massage is not worth it. The right choice will be made by a specialist who knows the clinical picture of the patient.

The most famous way to influence the spine is a classic massage. The procedure is performed with superficial as well as deep strokes. Additionally, the technique of grinding, vibration and kneading is used. Power techniques for hernia of the waist are excluded.

Course duration is about 20 sessions. Spend them every day. Therapist performs a massage therapist, who begins with stroking movements and rubbing. As soon as the muscles are relaxed and heated, the doctor proceeds to the circular rubbing and the application of the elements included in the acupressure technique. Only after this, movements designed to stretch the spine are made, which allows reducing the pressure on injured intervertebral discs.

Note! The classic type of massage procedures can be performed for various forms of spinal hernia and has fewer contraindications.

You can speed up the recovery process of the patient with the help of vacuum massage. Conduct it using special tools (aspirators or cans). Perform the procedure by applying the aspirator nozzle to the site of hernia, using a pump reproduces negative pressure. When using cans, pressure (negative) is created by heating the container with a lit wick.

As soon as the device is fixed, it begins to slowly move along the skin of the back. Vacuum massage is designed to increase blood circulation in all affected tissues. Make the procedure every other day. Course duration is on average 10 sessions. At the end of the session, the specialist should perform back stroking in the direction of the lymphatic and venous pathways.

Important! Vacuum sessions are not recommended during gestation and lactation, as well as in the presence of circulatory diseases, infections and tumors.

Why massage with hernia of the spine

If the ligaments are stretched, then the edges of the vertebrae are in contact and rubbing against each other, ossification occurs and the bones reactively grow, the joints become restrictedly mobile and take the wrong position.

In the lumbar spine there is the highest load on the intervertebral discs, therefore, they have a height greater than the discs of other spinal sections. The longitudinal ligament, on the contrary, is narrow and weak, so it is not capable of preventing the formation of a hernia or a prolapse of the disc between the vertebrae.

What is the massage with spinal hernia

At the stage of conservative treatment or after surgery, only the doctor must decide which massage to assign to the patient depending on the affected spine. There are several types of it:

  • therapeutic classic massage
  • segmental,
  • canned
  • honey
  • acupuncture,
  • swedish etc

Recommendations for the implementation of therapeutic exercises

Individually developed therapeutic exercise is quite effective for hernia of the lumbar spine. Perhaps this is only under the condition of accurate implementation of the recommendations of specialists in physical therapy (physical therapy).

When selecting a complex and in the process of its implementation, it is necessary to take into account the state of the body and to monitor the absence of pain. This is explained by the fact that the bulging of the intervertebral disc could happen in any direction. It is necessary to carry out only those loads that do not cause discomfort. It is forbidden to perform physical activities under which there is a sharp pain - this is very dangerous in this case!

It is necessary to remember that in the process of doing the exercises it is strictly forbidden:

  • Any sudden movements,
  • Overstrain of back muscles,
  • Weight lifting
  • General overwork of a sick person.

The individually developed exercise therapy complex, which is regularly and correctly performed, makes it possible to significantly strengthen the muscular corset of the back.

Examples of some exercises for lumbar hernia

  1. You need to lie on your back, put your hands parallel to the body, with the legs slightly bent. In this position, it is required to strain the abdominal muscles to the maximum solid state. This lesson is done 10 to 15 times,
  2. Lying on your back, place your arms parallel to your body and extend your legs. It is necessary to slightly raise the pelvic part and maintain this position for 10 seconds. After that, the body should be slowly lowered, and then return to its original position. Exercise such a plan is repeated at least 10-15 times. Between the climbs should take a break, a length of not more than 10 seconds,
  1. Stand straight and relax. In this case, the spinal column should be projected directly above the middle part of the pelvis. Between the legs should be a distance equal to the length of the foot. It is desirable that the head is located on the same vertical line with the axis of the body. This exercise allows you to strengthen the muscles of the abdomen. Tighten the abdominal muscles, deflect the body back, but at the same time press your thumbs on the lumbar region (hands are located behind)
  2. Take the starting position, as in the first exercise. In this case, place your hands at level 1 of the lumbar vertebra. When inhaling, deflect the torso first to the right and then to the left. On the exhale, return to the original position. Move your palm along the waist up and down. At the same time try to hand massaged all the lumbar vertebrae,
  3. Clenched fists, become smooth. Make a fist and place one hand over the other. Strongly press fists into the spine while inhaling. Go down slowly one centimeter after another. Try to wash almost the entire lumbar spine.

Both fist position in the lumbar region. Gradually move them down, massaging the spinal column. Get down with each breath lower and lower.

Massage for hernia of the lumbar spine

Therapeutic massage gives a positive effect due to the formation of new vascular connections. This improves blood flow through the blood vessels that are squeezed. An important role in this case has a decrease in edema in the soft tissues of the problem area, which accompanies the inflammatory process in many spinal pathologies.

At the present time, with lumbar hernia, experts widely use acupressure. This technique is used throughout the world. In practice, it has been proven that this method significantly improves blood flow and lymph outflow in the problem area. In addition, this kind of massage contributes to the active removal of toxins, slags and other harmful substances from the human body. As a result, acupressure significantly improves overall health and the condition of the sick person as a whole.

Summarizing all the recommendations of specialists, it can be argued that a non-surgical method of treatment for spinal hernia is effective in the case of the integrated use of several techniques at once.

An effective additional method of treatment is post-isometric relaxation (PIR). It is used to eliminate muscle "clips" and the accumulated negative energy.

Practice shows that as a result of competently conducted conservative complex treatment, approximately 90% of people suffering from hernia get rid of discomfort and pain. The absence of unpleasant sensations provides such patients with the opportunity to fully return to the normal rhythm of life and be quite active.

Massage for hernia in the lumbar spine

Treatment of hernia with massage and manual therapy is carried out in the case of mild pain, or when the patient is worried about severe back pain, and medications do not help to cope with it. It is important to understand that during the period of exacerbation, and when painful symptoms occur, the massage in the area of the hernia will be therapeutic in nature, and will be performed exclusively by a specialist.

What is useful massage before and after the removal of a herniated disc in the lumbar region:

  • stimulation of local and general blood flow,
  • elimination of tissue edema due to fluid retention,
  • muscle relaxation and elimination of muscle spasm,
  • improvement of cartilage regeneration processes by stimulating its nutrition,
  • general relaxation of the body, which positively affects the physical body and emotional state,
  • elimination of symptoms such as numbness and tingling of the skin,
  • strengthening the muscular system and ligaments,
  • reducing the severity of all clinical manifestations of hernia,
  • prevention of edema and tissue compression after disc removal.

Massaged area of the patient's spine during and after the massage loses spasms, and at the same time gets rid of problems with nutrition at the tissue level.

Execution Rules

How to do a massage for hernia of the lumbar spine:

  1. First of all, you need to take a responsible attitude to the choice of a massage parlor and a massage therapist. The specialist should have experience working with people who suffer from intervertebral hernia.
  2. Each massage technique has a different effect, and its choice for hernia matters. When the vertebrae are healthy, most methods are suitable, but if there is an offset or deformity, massage the back should be done carefully, and in this case, therapeutic and acupressure are best.
  3. The masseur should focus on soft techniques in the area of the lesion.. The displaced vertebrae need to be adjusted, but it is important not to aggravate the diseases, which is possible with rough manipulations.
  4. The appearance of discomfort and pain during the session is a good reason to stop the procedure, no matter what stage it is.but. The pain in this case may indicate a sudden complication of a hernia in the form of a pinching of a nerve or tearing off a part of the pulp.
  5. Massage is not performed in the acute period of the disease. It is impossible to affect the spine during the period of severe symptoms, when pain syndrome, spastic pain, general malaise are disturbed.
  6. The duration of the session is standard - from 20 to 40 minutes. In this case, the duration of the course is determined by the attending physician, and depends on other methods of therapy, when the patient is held in parallel. Interrupting the course will not give a positive result, but it will be a necessary measure if there is an aggravation in the middle of it.

Types and technology

Classical massage is performed for the prevention of spinal pathologies, it can be done on any part of the back, including the lumbar and lumbosacral regions. This technique is often used as a preparatory stage for manual therapy or spinal traction.

Classic massage for disc pathology before and after surgery is performed only by a qualified specialist. The masseur works on healthy areas of the back, bypassing the sore section. Recommended techniques of classical massage - rubbing, vibration and stroking.

Traditional massage has the following effects:

  • improvement of trophic processes and microcirculation,
  • normalization of tissue nutrition,
  • reducing the intensity of pain,
  • reduction of tissue swelling,
  • eliminate the compression factor of nerve endings.

Classic massage begins, like any other technique, with stroking. Then the specialist proceeds to rubbing, pinching, vibration movements. The massage also ends with stroking. During the session it is forbidden to exert strong pressure on the spinal column, as well as to make movements that in some way may affect the position of the vertebrae.

It is contraindicated to perform the classic massage technique for any infectious and inflammatory pathologies in the body. Back massaging is strictly prohibited in the period of exacerbation and in the event of complications.

Before the operation and after the removal of intervertebral hernia, the doctor will recommend a canned massage. Staging cans is done in the healthy part of the back, so as not to accidentally damage the diseased disc. Vacuum massage, as it is called differently, is aimed at improving the lymphatic current and blood circulation due to the suction effect.

The progress of the procedure:

  1. The patient's skin is smeared with a cream based on fat.
  2. The glass jar is disinfected and warmed up by a wick introduced inside.
  3. The jar is quickly fixed in the lumbar region, without touching the spine.
  4. Due to the vacuum effect, the capacity is sucked.
  5. During the session, the bank moves slowly along the spinal column.

Cupped massage is well suited to improve blood flow in the diseased area, which contributes to the accelerated recovery of damaged tissues.

Acupressure or acupressure is a way to influence certain areas of the body, the area of accumulation of blood vessels and nerves responsible for the innervation of individual organs. During the session, the masseur performs pressure on certain points, which altogether distinguish 365. Each of them coincides with the organ. The greatest number of such points is located on the feet and hands.

An important feature is that in order to normalize the function of an organ on the right side of the body, it is necessary to act on the left and vice versa.

Acupressure techniques:

  • light touches and strokes
  • pressing the pad of your thumb or forefinger
  • strong pressure to the formation of fossa,
  • vibrating movements, tapping with the index finger.

When performing a massage after the removal of a hernia, the movements should be careful and be carried out with preliminary preparation, that is, heating of the skin. Deep pressure should not be long.

Acupressure, depending on the intensity and duration of the session, can have either a tonic or a relaxing effect. In the first case, the specialist performs vibration movements and pressure, acting on one point for a minute.

Relaxing acupressure is done with the use of such basic techniques as rotational stroking and pressing with the pad of the index finger. Each movement is repeated 3-5 times, the duration of exposure to one point - from 2 to 4 minutes.

For spinal hernia, classic Thai massage is shown, but there is also a royal technique. This technique is characterized by close contact of the patient with the massage therapist. A specialist uses fingers, palms, wrists, forearms, knees and feet during a session. The patient always lies on his back in a relaxed state, which will be a prerequisite for the start of the session.

Thai massage in case of disc pathology allows to warm up the pathological area, remove tissue swelling, relax muscles, improve tendon elasticity.

This technique is contraindicated in pregnancy, cancer, chronic pathologies of the cardiovascular system. It is not recommended to undergo treatment for general malaise, when there is damage to the muscles and tendons.

Before the Thai massage, the patient should relax. The masseur creates a pleasant and comfortable environment so that nothing distracts from the procedure. It is also important to wear comfortable clothes.

Hydromassage

For intervertebral hernia in the lumbar spas, hydromassage will be an ideal option for additional treatment. Massage occurs with a water jet of different pressure forces. This technique has a tonic effect, eliminates tissue swelling and relieves inflammation.

The conditions for the success of the hydromassage will be a comfortable water temperature and a relaxed state of the patient. This massage allows you to remove the load from the patient's spine and speed up the recovery processes.

Massage with the use of honey has a considerable number of negative reviews, which is associated with its conduct during the acute inflammatory process. This condition will be an absolute contraindication to any massage technique.

This massage is performed with warm honey applied on the patient's back, after which the specialist rubs it into the body until it thickens. After this, the specialist applies his palms to his back and tears them off sharply. This is done before the appearance on the hands of white raid.

Contraindications

Massage with hernia in the lumbar spine is contraindicated in the following conditions:

  • acute infectious and inflammatory processes,
  • pathology of the cardiovascular system
  • gestation period,
  • exacerbation of the symptomatic complex,
  • increased body temperature
  • early period after surgery.

Only an experienced specialist should do the massage, otherwise there is a risk of exacerbation of the pathology and strengthening the severity of the symptomatic complex. Treatment in this case will have the opposite effect.

Methods for treating vertebral hernia

Neurologists identify several main areas of correction - conservative, alternative and surgical.

Non-surgical techniques include:

  • basic drug therapy
  • physiotherapy,
  • massage,
  • physiotherapy.

Alternative direction is based on traditional oriental medicine:

  • yoga,
  • breathing exercises,
  • acupuncture,
  • apitherapy,
  • hirudotherapy

In the absence of the proper effect, neurosurgeons suggest surgically removing an intervertebral hernia. Operations, depending on the volume of intervention, are:

  • microdiscectomy,
  • laminectomy,
  • endoscopy.

The choice of the method of treatment is determined by the treating doctor, based on the results of a neurological examination, instrumental studies.

Dr. Bubnovsky: “A cheap product # 1 to restore normal blood supply to the joints.” Helps with the treatment of bruises and injuries. The back and joints will be like at the age of 18, just smear it once a day. "

The "gold standard" is considered a magnetic resonance imaging technique, which accurately determines the localization, interaction with the nerve roots.

Types of massage

Massage technique for spinal hernia

Consider each view separately.

  • Classical. It is performed while sitting or lying down and includes stroking, rubbing, kneading and other techniques. It can be done both for therapeutic purposes and not for the postoperative recovery stage. Of all the techniques, rubbing is the longest and can take about 60% of the total manipulation time. Next is kneading, which takes up to 30% of the entire massage. Stroking and other techniques make up no more than 10% of the total work time.
  • Segmental. It differs from the classical one in that the effect is performed only on the affected area, namely, at the exit points of the nerve roots from the spine. It has shorter duration and higher efficiency due to the fact that the efforts of the doctor are focused on one area. In addition, the segmental massage is considered more gentle compared to the classic. Such a massage for lumbar hernia is one of the most effective methods of conservative treatment of the back. It is suitable for troubleshooting cervical and thoracic problems. Most often during the procedure, these areas are captured.
  • Canned. This is a unique combination of the sauna effect and the classic massage effect. The air under the can is rarefied, which stimulates blood flow to the area of impact. It helps to remove hypertonicity of muscles, to remove stagnation and pain. In addition, canned massage helps to eliminate toxins that have accumulated in the affected area during inflammation.
  • Spot. Acupuncture is used as an auxiliary method for the stimulation of biologically active points. The procedure is rather unpleasant, but effective, and can be done as a preventive measure. This effect is especially effective for the cervical region.
  • Honey. This is one of the most popular methods for treating the back. It is made with the use of liquid warm honey or propolis. The basic movements are light pats of the back. It is prescribed for neurological manifestations due to the strong reflex therapeutic action. Sometimes with intervertebral hernia this type of therapy is contraindicated. Honey massage should be performed by a specialist without the use of coarse and painful techniques. It is not suitable for the treatment of problems of the cervical spine due to the relatively low amount of muscle tissue in this area.
  • Swedish. This type of massage is based on stretching the muscles and eliminating seals, spasms and clamps. It is considered an offshoot of classic massage. During the procedure, the load on the heart remains within the normal range, since the effect concerns only the superficial muscles. Due to this, the technique is considered gentle and suitable for rehabilitation after surgical procedures.

Massage, as a method of treatment of intervertebral hernia

At the heart of massaging the back is a point effect on some areas. It has a relaxing, restorative effect. Efficacy against spinal pain has been proven in clinical practice.

The treatment procedure, especially for intervertebral hernia, should be done only by a qualified massage therapist who has knowledge of topographic anatomy. Before conducting it is recommended to consult a neurologist to clarify contraindications.

Types of therapeutic massage

Depending on the technique of carrying out there are variations:

  • classic healing
  • Thai,
  • sports,
  • honey
  • lymphatic drainage.

Therefore, by signing up for the procedure, it is necessary to clarify with the doctor whether it is possible to do this type of massage for spinal hernia.

· Relaxation of tense muscles of the back (the problem is typical for office workers, drivers),

· Increase of protective properties due to local point effects,

· Increased blood flow in the area of pain,

· Relief of pain caused by spasms.

· Reduction of edema due to active lymphatic drainage,

· Elimination of toxins, decomposition products,

· Reducing the intensity of pain,

· Reduction of muscle tension

· Alignment of the spinal column,

· Normalization of the local blood supply.

· Restoration of internal balance,

· Mild relaxation of all back muscles,

· Pronounced lymphatic drainage effect,

· Elimination of psychosomatic manifestations of intervertebral hernia (insomnia, nervousness, mood lability).

Manual technique is a more complex technique that requires knowledge and experience of the highest level. Achieving a therapeutic effect with this approach is much faster than with the classical one. Trust is needed only to highly qualified specialists. Do not trust the masters who work at a markedly low price.

Problems solved by massage

Massage for intervertebral hernia has a number of significant clinical effects:

  • Necessary muscle relaxation.
  • Hernia, putting pressure on the roots, causes a spasm of the innervated muscles. With the help of massage, calming, relaxation of the fibers takes place.
  • Significantly reduced pain.

It should be understood that hernial protrusion may occur when the muscular framework is weak, unable to perform a supporting function for the spinal column. Massage techniques develop, strengthen this area, which is especially important for those patients who can not play sports for objective reasons.

On the background of a back massage with hernia of the spine, the local blood supply increases, leading to relief of unpleasant painful sensations.

The psychosomatic moment is important. Hernia provokes constant pain, which does not stop either at night or day. Patients wake up in the night from cramps in the legs, feeling numb. Massage with hernia of the spine brings calm, improves sleep, decreases nervousness.

When is it prohibited to conduct?

A neurologist knows that there are a number of conditions when massage is prohibited in case of an intervertebral hernia. These contraindications include:

  1. Migrating hernia and prone to sequestration, as a high probability of separation of the fragment from the total mass, followed by a nerve root block.
  2. The large size of the hernial protrusion with severe compression of the spinal cord.
  3. Predominant localization near the root.
  4. Elderly patient age.
  5. Related physical conditions - fever, infectious diseases, oncology, high blood pressure.
  6. The period of exacerbation, accompanied by a pronounced soreness. At such times, any technology can only worsen the condition. Therefore, it is recommended to initially take advantage of basic drug therapy, and only after relieving pain, proceed to the procedures.

Massageperformed during a hernia of the cervical region, it is important to be careful in connection with the presence of important vascular structures on the neck, a large number of external and deep lymph nodes.

Why does pain decrease after a massage?

Long-existing hernia has a negative effect on the nerve endings, which means on the innervated muscles and organs. To understand how discomfort diminishes during a course, it is necessary to understand the sequence of steps:

  1. Enhanced blood flow in the affected area brings additional nutrients and oxygen.
  2. Infused oxygen reduces puffiness and increases regeneration.
  3. Muscle cramps are removed, they become more plastic. The painful tension is essentially removed, objectively it becomes easier.
  4. The gradually developed muscles create an important supporting framework.
  5. The spinal column is maintained in the correct physiological state. Direct load from the spinal column goes to the muscles.
  6. The compression of an intervertebral disk decreases.
  7. Stops further loss of the hernial fragment.

During the massage, hormones of pleasure are produced - endorphins, which improves the condition.

From these described stages it is clear that with vertebral hernia you can be massaged, but only very carefully and consistently.

How to do no harm?

To massage did not bring harm, you must comply with the following conditions.

  1. With the exacerbation of pain, medical massage manipulations on the spine are unacceptable. All effects on the region of the spinal column - a strong irritant, can provoke even more serious complications, especially in the projection of the hernia.
  2. If during the course the pain has increased, it is necessary to interrupt the procedure, consult with the main attending physician (neurologist or neurosurgeon).
  3. Any techniques are carried out smoothly, without the use of force. Sharp movements, force effects are not allowed. They dramatically reduce the effectiveness of the procedure and can lead to a number of serious complications, for example, rupture of the ligament or the hernial sac itself. Coarse techniques lead to increased spasms of the paravertebral muscles, which narrows the canal of the root nerves, increases the pain.

Classical

The patient occupies the most comfortable position on the stomach or sitting. The structure of the procedure includes variations of stroking, rubbing, kneading and vibration techniques. The latter is used with great care.

  • Stroking is the slip of the hands of a specialist in the patient's skin without shifting it. The effects of the correct techniques - increased regional blood circulation, stimulation of lymphatic drainage, improvement of skin metabolic processes at the site of impact and throughout the body as a whole. Smooth movements will relax the nervous system, reduce swelling, reduce pain in the problem area.
  • Moderately vigorous rubbing contributes to localized body temperature rise. Promotes the stimulation of muscle contractions, accelerates the outflow of fluids, eliminates the effects of congestion in the area of impact. An important point in rubbing is the categorical avoidance of the hernia area.
  • Kneading stimulates muscle tone, increases blood circulation, increases the mobility of intervertebral joints.
  • Vibration accelerates the regenerative process in the tissues around the vertebrae, reduces pain.

In the classic version, there should be receptions from each category, or the benefits of such an impact will be either minimal or not at all.

Manual therapy

This is an integrated approach to the treatment of spinal problems. The purpose of the method is to restore the mobility of the disks, stabilize the vertebrae.

  • The peculiarity of manual therapy is in the point impact on the problem area. With manual therapy, the effect occurs on deep structures.
  • With the help of manual therapy in some situations it is possible to remove a hernia or reduce its volume, to avoid surgery.

Treatment by the method of manual therapy is carried out in several strictly defined stages.

  • First, the doctor must mobilize the vertebrae. After the effects, the spine comes to a normal physiological state. This will reduce pain and allow you to go to the next step.
  • The second point is relaxation. It is necessary to create a deep relaxation of the muscle frame. After that, sprains and muscle fibers are stretched.
  • At the end is squeezed. Due to the point effects, pinching and muscle seals are eliminated. Reduced pressure on the radicular nerves, and the pain goes away.

Before starting the course, a manual therapy specialist is required to schedule a multilateral examination of the patient. The doctor needs to know whether it is possible to massage a particular patient with a hernia, taking into account the current state, the presence of concomitant diseases.

Hardware massage

  • With the help of specialized hardware massagers, the back is massaged along the spinal column, and the specialist monitors the process, regulates movement speed and pressure.
  • Vibration machines should not be used, since on the contrary they can bring even greater inconvenience.
  • Apparatus effects are used to relax the large muscles of the back, similarly affects the deep muscle fibers and carefully work them out. Positive effects are observed after the first session.

The advantage is the possibility of carrying out procedures at home. To do this, you only need to agree with the doctor on a visit schedule.

Vacuum (can)

  • Vacuum massage is used primarily to stimulate blood circulation in the back skin.
  • The goal is to reduce sustained stagnation in the tissues, enhance the regenerative processes due to increased blood flow, relax the back muscles, improve their nutrition.
  • Can massage can be carried out at home.
  • Independently work the lower back does not work, but you can ask for help from relatives.
  • It is distinguished in a separate category, but the objectives and effects of the methods are very similar.

Before installing the can, the skin is moistened with cream or oil. After the sessions, bruises may form on the skin. This is a natural and normal phenomenon, do not be afraid of this.

The direction of movement of the vacuum flask or jar always goes along the projection lines of the blood and lymphatic vessels from the bottom up. Zigzag, spiral, wave-like movements are allowed.

Conclusion

Massage - the direction of medicine, the effectiveness of which depends on a large number of associated factors. Doctors recommend that before visiting the massage room, initially contact a neurologist, undergo a full examination, exclude contraindications, choose the most effective method. Only with a combination of these conditions, massage for vertebral hernia will bring the proper, long-lasting effect.

Causes of vertebral hernia

Most of the reasons that there is a violation of the performance of the spinal column, is in improper diet, poor circulation, excessive physical exertion. Active sports training, physically hard work, hypodynamia lead to pathological disorders of the spine.

The key factor in the emergence of this problem is hidden in a sedentary lifestyle. As a result, the muscles are gradually weakened, losing their functionality. Back massage has proven to be the most effective way to restore muscle tissue and strengthen them significantly.

Massage for lumbar hernia: performance technique

Before starting the procedure, the doctor should clarify with the patient if he is susceptible to hypertension. This is a serious contraindication to continue treatment. Massage also can not be carried out in the period of exacerbation.
If everything is normal, then you can proceed to the preparatory stage. It consists in performing a combined stroking in combination with a slight squeezing of the back muscles with the edge of the palm. Then kneading long and wide muscles with ring stroking is performed. When working with the gluteal muscles, the doctor adheres to the following scheme: ring strokes, long strokes, ring strokes again.

The final stage involves the repetition of already performed techniques with greater amplitude and with the same force.
The main part of the procedure includes ring and longitudinal strokes in the direction from the gluteus muscles to the center of the back and back, rubbing along and across the spinal column, as well as squeezing across the sacrum and lumbar spine.

Therapeutic effects of massage treatments

This type of medical procedures is an essential element of course therapy for herniated intervertebral discs in the lumbar region. Massages can relieve pain syndromes and tension. They normalize the nutritional process of the affected area, activate the body's immune system to combat the disease.

For spinal hernia massage is considered quite popular and productive tool against hernia formations. In almost 92% of all such situations, it turns out to stop the degenerative development, to restore the former forces and functions of intervertebral discs. In this case, the emphasis is placed on competent therapy and massage with elements of therapeutic gymnastics. If the hernia is still formed, massage helps eliminate surgical intervention in more than 71% of situations.

The massage procedure is carried out at the expense of special devices and hands of a specialist. Massage courses are prescribed exclusively by the attending physician. After one massage, do not hope for tangible changes in health. To achieve the expected effects, it is necessary to undergo a whole course of therapeutic procedures.

Lumbar hernia treatment

The process of treating a hernia of the spine is an incredibly difficult task that requires a skilled decision by an experienced specialist. There are three main areas that are used in the treatment of disease:

  • a conservative method, the main purpose of which is to eliminate the surgical impact on the spinal column,
  • surgical intervention,
  • recovery stage after surgery.

It should be noted that the conservative method is more likely to achieve positive results, depending on the location and the extent of hernia spread. First of all, it is necessary to achieve positive results for a long period and minimize the exacerbation stages.

The advantage of manual therapy for the treatment of hernial formations on the spine is the absence of age limits in its application: it has the same positive effect in use for both the infant and the elderly. In addition, tolerable non-traumatic manipulations gently but effectively affect the muscle ligaments, significantly reducing pain in the area of the disease.

So, it is necessary to determine the specific types of non-surgical effects committed for the treatment of intervertebral hernia:

  1. Resort and sanatorium type of treatment of intervertebral hernia.
  2. Physiotherapeutic effect by reflexotherapy and acupuncture.
  3. Conservative treatment with medication and medical observation.
  4. The use of yoga to treat intervertebral hernia.
  5. Massage effect on the disease.
  6. Various physical exercises for the treatment of lumbar spine hernia.

Massage efficiency for vertebral hernia

At the first stages of exacerbation of the disease, massage is contraindicated The reason for this is the fact that the instability of the spinal column can be caused by massage, especially in areas affected by hernial formation.

If spinal disc herniation is present and displacement of the intervertebral joints, the effect of massage effects increases significantly.

It is very important to find an experienced and highly qualified specialist. Because of this, there is every chance to defeat this ailment.

Technology of massage includes various subtleties and nuances. Massage should be neat and soft. It should completely eliminate pain when using a force element. If, nevertheless, pain syndrome appears, the massage course should be stopped for a certain period and it is necessary to consult a doctor about its further continuation.

With a sharp impact on the back there is a serious risk of further tearing of the intervertebral disc, resulting in a large swelling of the nerve trunk. Because of these injuries, there is a high probability that it will be necessary to resort to surgical intervention.

You can perform various types of massage hernia spine. For this you can use:

  • acupressure,
  • in common
  • canned
  • massage specific segments of the back,
  • Massage of all vertebral parts
  • thai

According to the rules of traditional medicine, before massaging the affected area of the back, the inflamed area is rubbed with fir oil. On top of the oil can be applied diluted with honey mummy (in the ratio of 100: 1). Massage in this case should be lightly clapping. Because of the adhesion of the skin of the back to the hands can cause pain, they should be tolerated.

Thanks to honey, cleansing, stretching of old slags takes place. After the honey massage procedure is over, you can apply warming ointments or gels on your back, then cover yourself with a warm blanket. Most of the patients already at the next massage show a significant improvement in their well-being.

And yet, in order to achieve the expected results from this therapy, one should apply a set of actions consisting of manual therapy, massage, physiotherapy, application of a therapeutic blockade and gymnastics.

In most cases, the use of massage is prescribed at the restorative stages of treatment of a lumbar spine hernia. This will significantly improve the quality of blood circulation in the area of the disease, to relax spasmed muscle tissue. After that, a decrease in pain syndrome can be observed, the nerve endings are transferred from the excited to a more relaxed mode, and the possible muscular atrophy is prevented. It is important that massage sessions are carried out in the absence of pain in the area of the damaged area.

As for the technique of massage performed with hernial formation, there are no strict restrictions. But she can be appointed exclusively by the attending physician. It determines what type of massage this therapy will be performed. Most often, clinical manifestations of the pathology, its degree of severity, and the presence of concomitant ailments can influence the decision of a specialist.

It is important to note that the implementation of massage sessions with our own efforts is unacceptable, these serious procedures can be trusted only to a qualified specialist.

This is very important because improper and gross manipulations can cause damage to your health.

Purpose of massage

  • Activation of blood circulation in the affected area and lymph flow.
  • Relaxation and stretching of spasm muscles.
  • Reducing pain.
  • Reducing the excitability of nerve endings.
  • Prevention of muscle atrophy.
  • Increased spinal mobility.
  • The patient has a feeling of warmth, comfort and relaxation in the lumbar spine and throughout the body.

Massage for hernia of the lumbar spine

What types of massage are effective for lumbar hernia?

The recommended type of massage depends on the cause of the pathology.

(if the table is not fully visible - scroll it to the right)

Depending on the individual susceptibility, the doctor may prescribe the following types of massage:

General massage rules for intervertebral hernia

Technique of various types of massage

Before performing the basic techniques, preliminary preparation of the lower back is carried out: the massage therapist warms the skin and muscles with light circular motions and strokes in order to avoid pain during the main part of the procedure.

Conservative treatment of hernia

Surgical intervention to eliminate a hernia, even if we are talking about the lumbar spine, is prescribed only in cases where other methods have been ineffective.

At the initial stages of the development of the disease, specialists prefer conservative treatment:

  1. Strict adherence to bed rest. The patient should be in a supine position, legs raised.
  2. Medication, including anti-inflammatory and painkillers.
  3. Appointment of physiotherapy, hirudotherapy.
  4. A visit to a chiropractor.
  5. Physical therapy classes.
  6. Passage of several massage courses.

Depending on the degree of development of the disease and the well-being of the patient, these methods allow to cope with intervertebral hernia without surgery, as well as to avoid unpleasant complications.

Hernia Massage Treatments

The protrusion of the nucleus negatively affects not only the spinal cord and blood vessels, narrowing the spinal canal, injuring the nerves and causing severe pain, sensitivity disorders in the limbs, as well as normal nutrition of the body's tissues. Both nervous and circulatory systems, internal organs suffer.

A masseur during a session acts on the soft tissues of the body with the help of hands or special devices.

Only an experienced specialist can entrust massage with intervertebral hernia, since it must be carried out with great care, without excessive activity, in order to avoid possible damage to the diseased parts of the spine.

About non-professional performance is indicated by increased pain in the patient.

This situation arises as a result of an increase in spasm of the spinal muscles and pressure on the damaged disc, which causes a subsequent indentation of the hernia into the spinal canal.

If you feel severe pain, it is necessary to discontinue the session to avoid serious complications.

The impact that occurs with a hernia of the lumbosacral spine should be soft, gentle, causing only warmth and muscle relaxation in the patient with a noticeable improvement in well-being.

Sessions should be held every other day. The minimum number is 8 sessions, the maximum is 10 sessions per treatment course.

The effectiveness of treatment with massage treatments

To massage the lower back with a hernia was really effective and did not cause harm, it is prescribed only when the acute period is past, or during the rehabilitation period after surgery. The purpose of the sessions is:

  • reduction of pain,
  • reduction of muscle tension
  • improving blood circulation
  • speeding up the healing process
  • preventing the development of chronic forms.

Varieties

In accordance with the survey data, different types of massage can be prescribed. The most productive:

  1. classic (also known as generic)
  2. segmental (applies only to the affected area),
  3. Swedish massage
  4. vacuum-canned (using special pneumatic cans of soft plastic, allowing to achieve good results),
  5. dotted
  6. honey

Each of these types is carried out taking into account the localization of the lesion and the application of facilitating the procedure. For example, when massaging the waist, the patient should lie on his stomach.

The patient's legs are slightly bent, and a small roller is placed under the tibia, relieving muscle tension in the lumbar region.

Thai massage

Thai massage exists from antiquity, when Thai folk healers began to apply a special technique of healing from diseases. It is based on kneading muscles, relaxing the body and concentrating the internal strength of the body. Every specialist does Thai massage in his own way (video massage allowance for spinal hernia is available), there is no more uniform technique. There are the following methods of treatment of lumbar disc herniation:

  • a man lies on his stomach
  • with the help of a bent elbow, a specialist with moderate force conducts in a rectus muscle of the back,
  • the movement is continuous, start from the cervical and finish on the buttocks,
  • then the master of the knees rests on the lumbar muscles, massaging this area with light circular movements,
  • then, with the help of a support, the specialist becomes the legs on the patient, with his heels presses on the paravertebral muscles, without going over to the chest.

Massage for spinal hernia is completed by lightly stroking the skin of the back using warm olive oil. Each kneading lasts 2-3 minutes. The session in the complex lasts at least a quarter of an hour. Only in this case, you can completely relax the muscular frame, improve blood circulation, relieve vasospasm. It is necessary to attend a massage therapist 3 times a week, at least 2-3 months.

Honey massage

Medicinal properties of honey are known for a long time, it is used in different ways. This product has anti-inflammatory, analgesic properties. Also, honey rubbing improves the trophism of the skin and fatty tissue, relieves puffiness around the nerve roots. Honey massage for intervertebral hernia is carried out as follows:

  • on the back of the patient in thin strips nammanosy honey
  • the doctor slowly rubs his skin
  • due to the sticking effect, the nerve receptors are more irritated, which tones the blood vessels, improves lymph flow,
  • the doctor with both hands massages the area of the direct and oblique muscles of the back, moving from the spine to the periphery.

Treatment sessions last 15–20 minutes. To achieve a good effect after 20-25 manipultayskyyatsy possible. For procedures use only fresh honey, which has a liquid form. To enhance the effect of making a mixture of olive and fir oil, propolis tincture.

Can massage

A can massage for vertebral hernia has a physiotherapeutic effect. The meaning of the method is the effect of rarefied air on the skin of the back. Using glass jars for the procedure, you can point out the necessary area of impact. Massage session takes place in the following sequence:

  • the patient is lying on his stomach
  • on the lumbar region on both sides put special cans, pre-burning oxygen in them with an ordinary match,
  • the bank is left immovable for 4-7 minutes,
  • then, without tearing it from the skin, slowly hold up to the thoracic spine, then return to the lower back.

The procedure lasts about 10-12 minutes. You can not leave the banks for a long time, because you can cause hematoma (hemorrhage) under the skin. Slow massaging increases blood circulation in the muscles, irritates the nerve receptors, reduces the fat layer, removes toxic products. Involvement of a herniated disc occurs due to the increased tone of the intervertebral and rectus muscles.

Acupressure

The Japanese technique of Shiatsu is taken as a basis when performing acupressure. The therapeutic effect is determined by the effect on the reflex and nerve points on the back. This eliminates overstrain in the lower back muscles, excess impulses from the spinal cord during disc hernia. Massages can be done with the help of fingers, elbows:

  • First, for 4-6 minutes, rub the skin of the back using various natural oils,
  • at the exit of the nerve roots, 2-3 cm away from the spine, gradually pressing on the muscles with your thumbs,
  • so hold up to 15-20 seconds at each point,
  • pass from the lumbar to the cervical.
